Jahrhunderts.The paper further develops Jan Patočka's reflections on Comenius' relevance for people today. Can a 17^th century thinker – whose philosophy chiefly belongs to the traditional metaphysical way of meditation on the universal relations of entire being including a human with his knowledge, thought and acting – still address people from the modern period? The introductory part deals with general methodological aspects of this question. The second part provides an analysis of the idea of the whole, which dominates in Comenius' thought, in connection with the issues of the humanisation of man. The third part relies on Patočka's interpretation of Čapek's philosophical essay Lame Pilgrim inspired by Comenius' consolatory writings. Also here, the idea of wholeness is considered.
